Subject: Tom's prayer update - October 2010

Dear prayer friends,

Not much has changed since a month ago; I still need that 2nd P-T job and wisdom to "jive" with the vision of a new software product I'm building for possibly thousands of future customers who need what this software will do. (Our prime distributor is very eager to offer this to their clients.) So please do pray that the work (or an eager investor or two) will come my way, and for God's way of wisdom to be clear. The one P-T job (sign-spinning) is even a bit more fragile than before.

A couple of days after my last letter went out, I got a letter from a dear lady I've known for 25 years, mid-40s, married, and 2 sons now out of high school. I thought you might appreciate her encouragements by "looking over my shoulder" (with her permission).

Hello Tom,

As I was reading through your most recent update, I have to tell you that I felt deep sympathy for your situation (or empathy?) since the Lord has taught me quite painfully over the past 5 years some of the lessons you speak of, concerning my own job status. I KNOW that I am not a promotional or sales person by nature, but unfortunately I have been convinced in the past to work on my own in several businesses (Tupperware, most recently Classical Conversations, etc., etc.) which taught ME many things and blessed others, but did little to add to our family income. Well, thank the Lord for a faithful, patient and wise husband who listens, questions and discusses with me what the Lord is revealing in these circumstances. The end result is that I have discovered there are basically (gross generalization coming) 2 types of people in business: 1 ~ those driven, motivated and gifted to lead and provide vision and, 2 ~ those gifted in working in support of the vision of the person/people in charge. So, I have a husband gifted with motivation, vision and drive who has a successful business and then I am in the category of those providing the support for the people leading. To that end I have just recently begun an entry level job with ___ County public schools working as a receptionist at ___ High school. The area where I feel compassion for your situation is in the job hunt. It took me 60 applications over a period of 5 months, with 10 interviews to obtain 3 job offers in a field where I have quite a lot of recent experience/training and each of the jobs was basically entry level or just above that! I will be praying for you as you continue to seek the Lord's guidance and wait for His leading. Thanks for the updates, friend.

In His grace, D. K.
"Praise the Lord, all nations; Laud Him, all peoples!
For His lovingkindness is great toward us, And the
truth of the Lord is everlasting. Praise the Lord!

Horrible, horrible! How could you stand it! I haven't done NEARLY that many. (After a fraction of that, I would have taken the 1st offer, maybe.) Thank you for sharing facts that abundantly prove that you DO know most of the feelings I've struggled with. And you DO understand what I briefly alluded to in that parenthetical saying "if my WIFE is in business, then I can help with that, but not on my own".

Thanks for your very special update, as well as for your renewed prayers for me. Yes, ever since my weeding business failed (which included that epiphany about my work style), I have elevated your husband and any businessman to deep admiration for doing what I now know I can't.

Uh, does this county job mean you folks have changed your plans to move north? I haven't forgotten the longterm plans for me to vacate your attic [in which you've kindly lent me space these several years].

Hey Tom,

Thanks for the reply. My motivations to keep going in the job hunt included T__, P__ and D__ [2 sons & husband]! They are my cheerleaders and they helped prop me up when my spirits were flagging. Plus our wonderful, praying friends at church were such an encouragement to me! So, our house had 3 showings over the past year and 0 offers. We have too many foreclosures and short sales for competition at this time, so we are letting our realtor contract expire and then will try again next summer (?) or fall, 2011. Just getting my foot in the door with a county position was a MAJOR undertaking, so that goes a long way to transferring in the future if we are able to move. We are trusting the Lord's leading, which at the present is indicating we should stay put in Sanford. Any other news and we'll be sure to contact you. :)

The last letter I sent out (which went to 360+ people) is at my website, along with all of the prior letters, TomsGoodFiles.com. Here's a direct link to the letters page:

http://www.tomsgoodfiles.com/mystorymenu.php

And if you missed the summary page (FAQ) that I gave last month, it really is a good read. I encourage you to click it. The hits on that page after my letter went out were very low, showing that most of you did not look at it. I assure you, if you read it, you will be glad-to-VERY-glad I suggested it. (Why do I believe you'll be VERY glad? That will become clear by the time you reach the end of it. You will be very happy!)
